Wire Tab™

Device for retaining the loose end of a wire in a desired position during construction

Background

New or remodeling residential and commercial structures are typically completed in phases. The work of one tradesperson may often negatively affect the work of another tradesperson.

Example

An electrician may wire a house and leave certain wires dangling in the kitchen to power under-cabinet light fixtures, or leave dangling wires in the hallway to connect a door bell. A drywall installer may completely conceal those dangling wires behind drywall or place the wires through the drywall in the wrong location.

Finding or repositioning "lost" wire ends requires cutting and subsequently patching drywall, often multiple times which is labor intensive, creates imperfections in the wall's appearance, and adds unbudgeted time and cost to the project.

Solution

The Wire Tab™ device includes a primary face and flange which are approximately perpendicular, and a channel protruding from the primary face. The primary face and flange hug the corner of a wall stud, and a loose end of electrical wire is threaded through the channel. When drywall is hung, a pre-measured and pre-cut drywall hole is positioned to surround the hole and wire segment so the wire end is available for use in wiring a light fixture or so in the correct place.

The Wire Tab™ device is small, inexpensive, and easy to use. The Wire Tab™ device can also be adapted for a variety of circumstances including thick walls.
